Best of Mohammed Rafi | 24 Dec 1924 – 31 July 1980

Mohammed Rafi, one of the most legendary playback singers in the history of Indian cinema, was born on December 24, 1924, in Kotla Sultan Singh, Punjab, British India (now in Pakistan). He was blessed with a melodious voice that captivated millions across generations. Rafi’s journey into the world of music began at a young age, influenced by his family’s love for music and his passion for singing.

His talent was recognized early on, and he received formal training in classical music under Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan. Rafi’s versatility knew no bounds, and he could effortlessly switch between genres, be it classical, ghazals, qawwalis, or romantic melodies.

Rafi made his playback singing debut in Lahore with the Punjabi film “Gul Baloch” in 1941. However, it was his move to Mumbai in the 1940s that marked the beginning of his illustrious career in the Hindi film industry. His breakthrough came with the song “Tera Khilona Toota Balak” from the film “Anmol Ghadi” (1946).

From then on, there was no looking back for Rafi. He went on to collaborate with the finest composers of his time, including S.D. Burman, Shankar-Jaikishan, Naushad, R.D. Burman, and many others. His voice brought life to countless iconic songs that remain etched in the memories of music lovers even today.

Rafi’s ability to emote through his voice, his impeccable diction, and his mastery over various musical styles set him apart as a true virtuoso. His partnership with playback singer Lata Mangeshkar also resulted in some of the most memorable duets in Hindi cinema.

Throughout his career, Rafi received numerous accolades, including six Filmfare Awards and the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award. His contribution to Indian music is immeasurable, and his legacy continues to inspire aspiring singers and music enthusiasts worldwide.
